Twitter Works

There’s been a bunch of discussion on the adult webmaster forums about whether Twitter is worth the effort. For starters, I sorta enjoy it. I think that’s important (for any endeavor). But it does indeed work - I’ve seen sales on sites that I almost never blog, but right after I tweet a sponsor’s blog post or gallery on them I’ll see a sale. Thing is,  you’ve gotta get the right strategy down.

What To Tweet, When To Tweet

I do a combination of personal tweets (when I’m out at bars, when a trick is coming over, etc) and porn tweets. You gotta find your own voice and balance. Obviously you’re not going to make money saying your at some bar, or commenting on the movie you just watched, but that may make you seem less commercial and make it more likely people will follow you. But as far as what you can use - sponsor blog posts, your own blog posts, your tube site videos, sponsor gallery pages… The list is pretty endless. If it’s gay porn and it’s hot, then people will want to see it.

It’s a good idea to Tweet at all hours of the day. Twitter is a definite case of “what have you done for me lately?” Tweets have a very short lifespan. You will find tweeting during the evening (in the US) is probably the most profitable since you have the most people actively looking at Twitter, but don’t forget people in other parts of the world…

Bit.ly - A key piece in the puzzle…

Bit.ly is extremely useful for making Twitter perform. It shortens your URLs for you, shows you stats on how many people clicked through, where they came from, etc. Here’s the general interface…

Bit.ly Home page

But you can get more in depth data as well. As you can see I’ve had 2,368 clicks just in the past week - not bad given that I only have about 450 followers so far. Here’s the clicks for the past month…

Bit.ly traffic for the past month

The low days in the past week were when my Internet connection was down. You can sorta see when I got the hang of it and my clicks started increasing…

Now Bit.ly isn’t just a URL shortener, you can actually tweet from Bit.ly. After you shorten a URL it gives you the option to tweet the URL. VERY handy!

Twittering from Bit.ly

The other advantage is that as the search engines start integrating Twitter content into their search results Bit.ly is the URL shortener that they support best (so far). For starters, Bit.ly does 301 redirects, so you get full credit for the link. But more than that the search engines don’t use the Bit.ly URL, they ignore that and act as if your URL is the one that was twittered (or is that tweeted?)

Twitter Badges For Your Website

One of the key ways to get more people to click on your links is to get more people to see your tweets. I’ve only got 450 followers but I get a decent amount of clicks. You want as many people to see your tweets as possible - so basically you want to be seen by more than just people on Twitter. One of the key tools here is to use a Twitter “badge” which shows your most recent tweets. Here’s mine (which is located in the sidebar of my main blogs)…

Twitter badge

This basically gives you the chance to do what I’d call “microblogging”. It only take a few minutes a day to put out 5 or 10 tweets with links, but it would take far longer to do 5 or 10 blog posts / TGP galleries, etc. This is where you can let sponsors do the work for you. All you have to do is cull through what they’ve done and tweet it.

As you can see, all my Bit.ly links are clickable from the badge my web site - which greatly increases my clicks. You can see in the graph further up in the post that I get half my clicks from rawtop.com - nearly twice as much as I get from twitter.com. If you have big porn sites, this is a great way to get more exposure even if you’re just starting out with Twitter and don’t have many followers.

My Future Plans

One of my goals is to automate my tweets, so I can prep them at the same time as my blog posts and then I can have a database app post the tweets when the blog posts go live. That will require working with the Bit.ly API and the Twitter API. Should be a fun project if I can find the time for it.

I also want to figure out how to increase my number of followers with people who are genuinely interested - not just with bots (if only I had $10 for every bikini-clad girl I’ve blocked from following me). I thought having the badge on my site would help, and it has a little, but not as much as I was hoping for.

Wily Willy Outranked rawTOP For Something!!!

This is a very small accomplishment, but rawtop.com has been doing well with organic traffic and really is the place where I get the biggest return on my time, but I’ve been putting time into my other domains (Wily Willy and Twisted Pig) simply because I want them to rank well in the future.

Well, for the first time I noticed a SERP where Wily Willy outranked rawTOP. The term was ‘www.cocksuremen.com’, and Wily Willy was #3 (directly after pages on cocksuremen.com), while rawtop.com ranked #5 and #6. Mind you, I think the rawtop.com pages are more enticing to click on, but I’m still quite happy to see little ‘ol Wily Willy do well… :)

April 2009 (Thank You Leo Giamani)

Well, April was a month of getting back on track. Not that I’m where I want to be - my earnings have basically been flat since November. Given the economy I guess I should be OK with that, but I really want more than that… If I were growing 6.5% per month (which is my goal this year), I’d be up 20+%, but instead I’m stuck at flat earnings. March was a bad month for me since I got distracted. At least in April I reversed that trend…

Before I start - April was a day shorter than March, so going down 3% would have been staying the same. So add 3% to the numbers as you see them…

And one other thing - I had another server outage in April. The monitoring program I had monitoring my other server wasn’t monitoring my porn server, so I’ve rewritten the app and shouldn’t have long outages in the future…

rawTOP.com

Well, I peaked at 4,322 visitors on the 26th - which is good to see… Been hovering around 4,000 for a while now - obviously I want to see that continue to go up and will be happy when I’m consistently above 4,000. Either way, traffic went up 2.5% (+3% for the shorter month), which is good.

The big increase was in organic traffic, and the primary reason was because I got (and held) the top ranking for the term ‘Leo Giamani‘. I’ve put the graph below, but it represented a 124% increase in traffic on that exact term, and 88% for all keywords with ‘giamani’ in them. I now get substantially more traffic on ‘giamani’ keywords than I do on ‘rawtop’ keywords. The funny part is that there’s a rumor Leo is upset about the whole bareback thing and wants to reform his act and only do condom stuff - but the top site for his name is my bareback site. Hopefully he’ll do more bareback stuff so I can keep the content fresh and my top spot secure.

I should also mention that traffic on ‘rawtop’ is down about 9% (6% after factoring the 3% in for the shorter month), as is traffic on my sex blog. There’s a simple reason for this - I haven’t been in a sexual mood the past months and my loyal readers are getting tired of me not having sex. I don’t fuck just to keep my readers amused, but it is an effect… At least some of that traffic will come back as my sex life resumes. Going to IML will definitely help in that regard…

Here’s the change in traffic on ‘Leo Giamani‘…
rawtop.com - Increase in traffic on 'Leo Giamani' - April 2009

WilyWilly.com

Traffic continues to go up on Wily Willy, which is good… It’s up 12% (+3%). Part of the increase is referrals from rawTOP.com - since I mentioned the site prominently in a blog post on rawtop. But if you look at organic traffic you’d think it had gone down since the number is red, but only it’s relative percentage went down. Search engine traffic actually went up 7% (+3%) - so that’s an objective number that I’m glad to see continuing to go up.

TwistedPig.com

After a long time of not linking to Twisted Pig from rawTOP.com, I finally did since it seemed pertinent and there were enough posts on the site to mention it. I actually did a poll asking people whether they thought I should show gloves in fisting scenes and got a resounding 2-to-1 ‘no’.

So while that increase looks exciting it’s not as exciting as you might think since it’s bareback traffic that’s already seen my bareback porn blog. That said I am starting to see sales off the site. It’s selling My Gay Cash’s BulldogPit.com pretty well.

My Gay Cash Hosted Blogs

At a bit over 2% growth (+3%) the hosted blogs are going well. Again, this is just my traffic on those blogs. And I’m seeing a growth in organic traffic (a bit over 5% +3%), which is sorta my objective with having these blogs. The one blog that’s just not performing for me at all is the Bulldog Pit blog. Not sure why…

Affiliate Traffic And Revenue

If you add in the 3% for the shorter month, outbound traffic was up about 5.4% and revenue about 8%. Given that my goal is 6.5% growth each month that’s good, though I do have some catching up to do.

And again, the programs are sorted in order of revenue earned. The first few are the most important and the others far less important.

What’s interesting is how the Leo Giamani traffic at rawtop.com pushed Jake Pays into the #2 slot. My traffic to them was up 31% (+3%) and revenue doubled. Just shows how some traffic is just worth more than other traffic. People who search on the name of a porn star seem to want to buy memberships to sites featuring that porn star. You can also tell by the conversion ratio - 1:124 - I wish I had that conversion ratio for all my sponsors!

March 2009 - Distracted, Lost A Bit Of Ground

Well, March was not a particularly good month for me. My goal is to go up 6.5% per month so I can roughly double what I earn by the end of the year. January was a month of treading water (overall), February was good (up over 10%), but March I got distracted ’cause I had to do a bunch of work to get our apartment ready to sell, and just didn’t pay enough attention to my sites and it showed with lower revenue. Actually, total revenue was roughly where was the prior 3 months, but that’s an 11% decrease on a daily basis since March had 31 days and February had 28. In terms of dollars per day I went back exactly to where I was in January… Not the end of the world, but it’s never good to go backwards when you’re trying to go forwards. But in this economy it could have been much worse.

Here are the details, traffic on my sites, then outbound traffic to sponsors and revenue…

rawTOP.com - There was an 11% increase, which given the longer month means virtually zero growth on a daily basis. While I lost ground on revenue, at least I didn’t lose it in traffic. If I can keep people coming and coming back they’ll buy stuff when I offer stuff that’s new and interesting…

FYI - the dip at the end of the month is because my server was down for a few hours. Had that not happened my traffic and earnings would have been slightly better.

Where I continued to go up was in organic traffic. I’m starting to see rawtop.com become something of an authority site and rank for semi-competitive search terms. This is what I’ve been waiting for and I’m anxious for that to be even more the case. Some people run “blog networks”, but the blogs in them never achieve authority status with the search engines so in a year or two I’ll completely blow them out of the water when it comes to organic traffic.

The dip in referral traffic is because a popular blog mentioned me in February and the traffic died down, and the traffic has fallen somewhat from a forum I was getting a bunch of traffic from. Google Images traffic is my main source of referral traffic and it was up 7.2%, which means it was down slightly on a daily basis since up 11% is holding steady…

Overview of traffic to rawtop.com - March 2009
Traffic sources to rawtop.com - March 2009

WilyWilly.com - This just goes to show that when you don’t have much traffic it’s not hard to go up. Overall it was a down month for me, but Wily Willy was up 28%, which is well above the 11% to hold steady. I actually lost ground on organic traffic, so that was a negative, but Google Images kicked in and went up 129%. I’d say that’s the primary and possibly only reason my traffic went up in March on Wily Willy. Since Wily Willy is a secondary priority for me, nearly all the posts I did on it were My Gay Cash posts that I was basically obligated to do.

Overview of traffic to wilywilly.com - March 2009
Traffic sources for wilywilly.com - March 2009

TwistedPig.com - This just shows how grim things can be when something is completely neglected. Remember being up 11% is holding steady and I was down 16%… But there wasn’t much traffic to start with. It’s just where I’ve thrown a few posts that had a bit of an edge to them…

Overview of traffic to twistedpig.com - March 2009
Traffic sources for twistedpig.com - March 2009

My Gay Cash Hosted Blogs - If you haven’t read previous posts, I do the writing for the My Gay Cash hosted blogs and in exchange some of the traffic on those blogs “belongs” to me.

This was the other bright spot in March in that my traffic on the blogs was up 21%. Thing is, it didn’t help all that much with sales as you’ll see below.

The reason traffic was up was because of Google Images (up 37%) and beccause the blogs were put on the blogroll of a popular Blogspot blog without an affiliate code. I’ll never understand people who go to the effort of doing porn blogging and don’t bother to monetize their traffic…

DirtiDarlene.com - Things went up a bit just out of natural variation (considering I haven’t done updates on the site in a LONG time).

Affiliate Revenue

So overall, outbound traffic to sponsors was up 2.1%, but that’s down since it was a longer month and should have been up 11%. Revenue got hit even harder than traffic - it was down nearly 1%.

And just a reminder when looking at the numbers - they’re ordered by revenue and drop off very quickly. So the first three I make good money on, then the next four or so I make some money on, and the others are just filler.

Overall:
Traffic: +2.1%, Revenue: -0.9%

February 2009 - Steady Increases

Apologies, I’m way late getting this up… February was a good month for me. By all rights February should be about 10% down from January since it’s got 28 days instead of 31, but I actually saw increases across the board…

rawTOP.com - Given the amount of traffic on rawtop.com growth is usually slower, but I was up 1.4% (+10%). I was actually quite pleased… :) As you can see the growth came from more search engine traffic. In that respect I started ranking well for the term ‘leo giamani’, which brought a bunch of really good traffic and lots of sales on Jake Cruise/Cocksure Men.

rawtop.com Overview for February 2009rawtop.com - Traffic sources for February 2009

WilyWilly.com - It’s easier to grow when there isn’t a lot of traffic to start with, so the 33% growth (+10%) that Wily Willy experienced is good, but not as exciting as the 1.4% growth of rawTOP. You can see the most dramatic growth was in referrals, which is because Google Images started sending traffic.

WilyWilly.com - Overview for February 2009WilyWilly.com - Traffic sources for February 2009

TwistedPig.com - I started up a new blog in February for fetish. rawTOP.com is about bareback, Wily Willy has a “cleaner” vibe, so I needed a site for stuff that was hard core - guys drinking piss, fisting, etc. There is overlap between the sites and I find I post things on more than one site, but write from different angles depending on the site. I literally just threw up the site and still haven’t done much with it, so I’m not expecting a whole lot out of it for a while. I didn’t even mention it on rawTOP.com for well over a month…

My Gay Cash Blogs - One of the reason why My Gay Cash is my biggest sponsor is because I write for their hosted blogs. When I get nothing else done, I do MGC stuff ’cause there’s just a certain amount I have to get done each week since other affiliates depend on it. I’m paid by getting commissions on sales from the blogs (but not in a way that cuts into other affiliate’s traffic), so the traffic you see below does contribute to my income. Dirti Darlene - Just for fun I thought I’d throw in the traffic on the one straight porn blog I played around with a long time ago. It hasn’t been updated in ages, but still gets a fair amount of traffic… Go figure… As you can see, it didn’t see an increase - it’s down around 10% which is what you’d expect.

Affiliate Income

Once again, remember a decrease of 10% is holding steady given the difference in the number of days in each month. Because of that it means February was a decent month for me financially - I was up on daily revenue at a time when a lot of people were complaining about sales going down.

You can really see the effects of ranking well for ‘leo giamani’… Outbound traffic is up 54% to Jake Pays and revenue is up 94%… Exactly the type of thing I like to see! :)

And just a reminder, the programs are ranked presented in order of how important they are to me in terms of revenue. The first few are where I make most of my money and the others are far less important… Tony and Cam is the big mover for February…
