March 2009 - Distracted, Lost A Bit Of Ground

Well, March was not a particularly good month for me. My goal is to go up 6.5% per month so I can roughly double what I earn by the end of the year. January was a month of treading water (overall), February was good (up over 10%), but March I got distracted ’cause I had to do a bunch of work to get our apartment ready to sell, and just didn’t pay enough attention to my sites and it showed with lower revenue. Actually, total revenue was roughly where was the prior 3 months, but that’s an 11% decrease on a daily basis since March had 31 days and February had 28. In terms of dollars per day I went back exactly to where I was in January… Not the end of the world, but it’s never good to go backwards when you’re trying to go forwards. But in this economy it could have been much worse.

Here are the details, traffic on my sites, then outbound traffic to sponsors and revenue…

rawTOP.com - There was an 11% increase, which given the longer month means virtually zero growth on a daily basis. While I lost ground on revenue, at least I didn’t lose it in traffic. If I can keep people coming and coming back they’ll buy stuff when I offer stuff that’s new and interesting…

FYI - the dip at the end of the month is because my server was down for a few hours. Had that not happened my traffic and earnings would have been slightly better.

Where I continued to go up was in organic traffic. I’m starting to see rawtop.com become something of an authority site and rank for semi-competitive search terms. This is what I’ve been waiting for and I’m anxious for that to be even more the case. Some people run “blog networks”, but the blogs in them never achieve authority status with the search engines so in a year or two I’ll completely blow them out of the water when it comes to organic traffic.

The dip in referral traffic is because a popular blog mentioned me in February and the traffic died down, and the traffic has fallen somewhat from a forum I was getting a bunch of traffic from. Google Images traffic is my main source of referral traffic and it was up 7.2%, which means it was down slightly on a daily basis since up 11% is holding steady…

WilyWilly.com - This just goes to show that when you don’t have much traffic it’s not hard to go up. Overall it was a down month for me, but Wily Willy was up 28%, which is well above the 11% to hold steady. I actually lost ground on organic traffic, so that was a negative, but Google Images kicked in and went up 129%. I’d say that’s the primary and possibly only reason my traffic went up in March on Wily Willy. Since Wily Willy is a secondary priority for me, nearly all the posts I did on it were My Gay Cash posts that I was basically obligated to do.

TwistedPig.com - This just shows how grim things can be when something is completely neglected. Remember being up 11% is holding steady and I was down 16%… But there wasn’t much traffic to start with. It’s just where I’ve thrown a few posts that had a bit of an edge to them…

My Gay Cash Hosted Blogs - If you haven’t read previous posts, I do the writing for the My Gay Cash hosted blogs and in exchange some of the traffic on those blogs “belongs” to me.

This was the other bright spot in March in that my traffic on the blogs was up 21%. Thing is, it didn’t help all that much with sales as you’ll see below.

The reason traffic was up was because of Google Images (up 37%) and beccause the blogs were put on the blogroll of a popular Blogspot blog without an affiliate code. I’ll never understand people who go to the effort of doing porn blogging and don’t bother to monetize their traffic…

DirtiDarlene.com - Things went up a bit just out of natural variation (considering I haven’t done updates on the site in a LONG time).

Affiliate Revenue

So overall, outbound traffic to sponsors was up 2.1%, but that’s down since it was a longer month and should have been up 11%. Revenue got hit even harder than traffic - it was down nearly 1%.

And just a reminder when looking at the numbers - they’re ordered by revenue and drop off very quickly. So the first three I make good money on, then the next four or so I make some money on, and the others are just filler.
